We were talking on a Zoom last night about using what you already know in business, and I realized how true that was.
Whenever you’re planning new strategies, or branching out with a new business model, try to build on what has gone before.
There might be occasions when you need (or want) to pivot completely and have to learn everything from scratch but those occasions should be rare.
What might have seemed like a complete about face, as I abandoned being a fiction author early in lockdown and started creating planner templates, was less of a change than it appeared to be.
For example, I was already designing my own covers for fiction and non-fiction books (and had taken a graphic design diploma at the art college here to improve my skills.)
I was already very familiar with Amazon KDP.
I just looked at what else was selling there and the idea of low content books came up.
Then, from somewhere (not sure where) I learned about the concept of private label rights and the idea for a PLR shop was born.
It took me about a year from my “pivot” to get my shop fully functional and launched, but meanwhile I started creating low content PLR products for my store and building my list by putting products into bundles and giveaways.
As an author, I managed several email lists under a few different pen names. So I understood lead magnets and autoresponders and so on.
So it wasn’t a huge step forward to create my “new” business!
Give yourself some grace if you’re doing everything from scratch, but also think about how you could incorporate past experience in life or business to make your job easier.
No experience is ever wasted!
A year after I opened it, my shop is doing so well I have no plans to go back to writing fiction.
And it’s my shop birthday tomorrow, so look out for a surprise from me in my next email. 💖
