When I was a toddler, my mom always taught me that the magic word was “please.” There was no point demanding anything. Without that magic word attached, it wasn’t forthcoming.

But now I think there’s another magic word in my life, and that magic word is “No.”

I think I have the please thing cracked, but the “no” thing has been a bit trickier. 😊 I’m still working on that one.

There are so many things to buy that I’d love to own, so many opportunities and things to get involved in, so many events to take part in, and web pages to read, so many social media accounts to follow. It’s overwhelming.

But the thing is, even when something is there for the asking, there’s always a cost involved.

Every time you say “yes,” you have to pay with time, effort, and attention even if not with money.

And time, effort, and attention you give by saying “yes” to one thing means you don’t have the time, effort, or attention left to say “yes” to something else that might be more helpful or meaningful to you.

It’s always an exchange. You don’t give. You don’t get. Just like using the P-word!
