It was pointed out to me (thank you!) that my message yesterday about time being non-refundable might have been triggering for those with time/scarcity anxiety.
Sorry about that. 😟
It was designed to help the procrastinators among us – that would be me then!
But I also get the anxiety about the passage of time and how it whooshes past, something which seems to happen faster as I get older.
The years beyond 50 have done that for sure.
So I thought I’d balance things out today with a few tips on how you can make time slow down a little. These are essentially the tips I use when I’m feeling overwhelmed or getting a bit anxious about the stuff I have to do or which I left undone at the end of the day.
ONE: None of it truly matters. It’s all small stuff in a tiny part of the history of the world and universe. If you don’t launch the product or send the email, no one really cares except you. To make this one work, don’t promise things to anyone else you can’t deliver! But even if you have, an apology goes a long way if there’s an unavoidable delay.
TWO: Enjoy the moment. You can make time expand by focusing on what you’re doing right now and enjoy every part of being alive whether you’re working or not. Mindfulness really works but you have to keep reminding yourself to practice it!
THREE: Limit the time you work. I spend two hours a day walking my dog whatever the weather. They are two of my favorite hours in the day. Yesterday we played on the beach. Usually we are up the hills or in the woods. At night we just walk around the neighborhood. It’s all good. And I have plenty of other time off because working all the time is not living and it’s not good for anyone.
FOUR: Make more memories. Plan plenty of good times every year. Now we are allowed to travel, I’ve done a lot more of it and have had some wonderful trips making memories this year. But it doesn’t have to be costly foreign travel. You can make memories with friends and family much closer to home with whatever you like to do – memorable meals, concerts, books, movies will all be things to look back on to make a year seem fuller. The weeks, months, and years when you do very little to remember seem to disappear faster (looking at you 2020 – 2021)
