Seth Godin once wrote about something he calls the lizard brain, the ancient part of our mind that tries to keep us safe from risk, criticism, and change.
It’s the thing that makes you say you want something, work toward it, and then somehow sabotage the final step.
Maybe you write most of the blog post but delay publishing it or record the video but never post it.
You get 95% of the way there and then stall.
The closer you get to finishing something, the louder this kind of resistance tends to become…
“What if people don’t like it?”
“What if nobody notices?”
But it’s just your lizard brain doing its job, trying to protect you from the discomfort of being seen, stopping your progress.
Successful people are not immune to the feeling, but they take the last step anyway.
They act despite the noise in their brain and they publish or launch, sending the thing out into the world.
That final small step might be as small as hitting send but it’s what turns all the effort that went before it into a real leap forward.
And without it, all the work you did up to that point remains invisible.
So when you notice yourself hovering just before the finish line, recognise the moment as your lizard brain trying to keep you safe by blocking your progress, and press send. The more you ignore the lizard, the easier it becomes, though it never quite shuts up entirely. 💖
