Tonight, I’m heading to the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh to see Ian Rankin speak about his new thriller, The Heights.
Rankin has sold over 35 million books, his Inspector Rebus series defined the "Tartan Noir" genre, and he’s widely considered one of the greatest living crime writers.
Even with AI to help us be better authors these days, it takes experience and practice to write in such a powerful way that books fly off the shelves. And even more if you want to stick in the reader's mind.
In Mortal Causes, book 6 in the Inspector Rebus series Rankin’s description of the killing floor in an Edinburgh slaughterhouse was so viscerally graphic, so thick with sensory detail, blood, and mechanical coldness, that I haven't been able to eat beef, pork, or lamb since. I'm just hoping he never writes about poultry! 😱
But Rankin started just like the rest of us with the first word, the first sentence and the first page and then he perfected his craft one day at a time over decades. He had to write the bad sentences to get to the good ones until he had the kind of skill that could turn a carnivore off meat.
