Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, wrote: “You can do so much in ten minutes’ time. Ten minutes, once gone, are gone for good. Divide your life into 10-minute units and sacrifice as few of them as possible in meaningless activity."
I like the respect for time behind this idea, but you have to be careful about that “meaningless” word.
Sometimes meaningful is resting, or chatting to friends, or playing with your puppy.
You don’t have to cram every ten-minute space with useful business tasks until your day feels like an overstuffed suitcase you can barely close. 🤣
But there's a difference between choosing to relax and surrendering your time without noticing.
Ten minutes spent doing something you enjoy can be meaningful, but ten minutes that becomes an hour of doomscrolling, watching strangers argue or checking whether anyone has liked your post may leave you wondering where your time, and probably your good mood, went.
Meaningful time often happens in the real world. It leaves you with something: progress, rest, pleasure, connection or a memory.
You don’t have to make every moment productive. Just try not to give too many of your irreplaceable moments to things that give nothing back. 💖
