Hi

If you've been trying to do something for a while without succeeding, it can be difficult to know what to do next.

Are you in danger of giving up just before the breakthrough? Or are you wasting time on something that is never going to work?

There's one guideline I often use in this situation: look at the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

If that gap is getting smaller, just keep going and keep improving. You may not have reached your goal yet, but “not there yet” is very different from “not getting there” even if it's taking longer than you'd like it to.

But if the gap isn’t shrinking, or it's even growing despite your best efforts, it's probably time to reconsider. Your time and energy could produce better results if you invested them in another opportunity or skill.

This doesn’t mean abandoning everything too soon and hopping straight to the next shiny idea. You have to give something a proper chance and do enough focused work to get beyond the difficult beginner stage.

After that, don’t judge only by whether you've arrived. Look at whether you're getting closer.

Your progress, or lack of it, will help show you the way. 💖
